How to decide what content to include in your PowerPoints?

I enjoy designing PowerPoints for business presentations. However, sitting down to organize images, write text, insert graphics and add animation to a presentation sometimes become very time consuming. But I think it’s all about recognizing the importance of professional presentation.
We need to know our audience before creating PowerPoints to address them. This is a crucial process for all of us.
What is your strategy and how you design your powerpoints?

I think the most important consideration should be the audience, their level of knowledge, ability to understand and receive, etc. No technical jargons and acronyms should be used for the general audience. A distinct and legible font should be used, preferably a bright font on a dark background.

99% perspiration and 1% inspiration, yet it takes inspiration to make a good presentation. I always ask myself "so what?" when my presentation is finished. A good presentation has to take the audience an extra mile or it is not worth attending!

I normally work about 10-12 hours for an hour's presentation.

I take the following factors into consideration.

1) Details of the proposed audience like, mix of gender, age, qualifications, experience, tech savvy or not etc.

2) The real subject of the presentation, the objectives.

A combination of the above decides my presentation.

I ensure that there would be enough pictures but not too many.

Certainly not too many sentences (though I confess that initially when I was experimenting with PPTs I used to realy write paragraphs no end)

And for an hour's presentation I prefer to have no more than 25 slides at the most but not lesser than 20 slides.

Most importantly I try to really choose the right PPT template that would compliment the subject, the objectives and yet can retain the attention of the audience.

Surething.

I am in fact trying to upload three PPTs.

The first one is made out for a Seminar for students and I had to have some fundamental information in for them. It talks about delivery of microcredit so I have chosen a slide design where a big Dollar is being carried / delivered in a push cart of a retailer.

The font chosen is not so good to view in a condensed mode but looks swell when shown/seen on the full screen through a Projector.

The second presentation was for emerging practitioners and they had some knowledge but needed clarifications and consolidation of the knowledge.

The subject was "Graduation of microfinance clients into micro entrepreneurs" and so I chose a design showing a graduating scholar.

The 3rd one is also for a seminar with audience ranging from fresh students to practitioners to professors and the time given was about 15 minutes. the subject was on "Bottlenecks in Microfinance" and so I chose a design with a bottle empahasizing on the neck of the bottle or at least nearest to it. :-)

Fellow participants may go through and discuss, please

@Hemantha its great to see ur ppts here, all of them are very good.
I liked the 3rd one the most, as you have showed it with a different concept. These presentations are very encouraging for me , and hope for others also. Thanks :-)

@Hemantha thanks for sharing your experience, can you please upload any of your presentation here so that we all can get a live example of the suggestions given by you. May be with some really helpful tips of your presentation I can design a much better PowerPoint.

I am a student and I agree with all your points. I daily present a seminar on different topic using slide show, I avoid using paragraphs, and try to include relevant content and make points with images. That makes my presentation more attractive with a clear message.
